Spotify will remove Neil Young’s music following the rocker’s protest of dissemination of Covid-19 misinformation on the streamer’s Joe Rogan’s podcast. Both Young, who shared a letter on his website, and Spotify confirmed the news in separate statements.

On Monday, Young posted a since-deleted letter on his website addressed to his management and record label demanding his music be removed from Spotify, noting that the company can have “Rogan or Young. Not both.” The Wall Street Journal first reported the news that Spotify will take down Young’s catalog. While his music is still on the platform at press time, it will likely be off Spotify imminently.

In Young’s new letter, he blasts Spotify as “a very damaging force via its public misinformation and lies about Covid.” He thanked his label Warner Records for standing by his decision and noted that a majority of his streaming revenue comes from Spotify.

“Spotify represents 60% of the streaming of my music to listeners around the world, almost every record I have ever released is available — my life’s music — a huge loss for my record company to absorb,” Young wrote. “Yet my friends at Warner Brothers Reprise stood with me, recognizing the threat the Covid misinformation on Spotify posed to the world — particularly for our young people who think everything they hear on Spotify is true. Unfortunately, it is not.”

In a follow-up letter posted just after his initial announcement, Young thanked Merck Mercuriadis and his company Hipgnosis Songs fund, which bought a 50 percent stake in Young’s publishing rights last year. He also called Spotify founder Daniel Ek his friend and said he was disappointed Ek had “taken the steps he has taken because it stopped my music from being shared on his SPOTIFY platform.” (A rep for Mercuriadis did not reply to a request for comment, but his Hipgnosis Studios posted a screenshot of Young’s open letter on Instagram on Tuesday with the message, ‘GO OFF NEIL’ and five clapping emojis.)

Young concluded his initial letter by calling for more artists and companies to take a similar stance and take their music off of Spotify to “stop supporting Spotify’s deadly misinformation about Covid.” (A rep for Young declined to comment.)

Rogan has stirred up considerable controversy on his show for platforming anti-vaccine theories. Hundreds of doctors signed a letter earlier this month demanding Spotify do more about Covid misinformation on the platform following Rogan’s podcast episode featuring Dr. Robert Malone, in which Malone spouted false statements about the Covid vaccine. Spotify bought the rights to Rogan’s podcast last year and has since drawn heavy criticism over its responsibility to moderate the content it owns.

“We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users,” the company said in a statement. “With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators. We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.”

SPOTIFY has recently become a very damaging force via its public misinformation and lies about COVID.

I first learned of this problem by reading that 200 plus doctors had joined forces, taking on the dangerous life-threatening COVID falsehoods found in SPOTIFY programming.

Most of the listeners hearing the unfactual, misleading and false COVID information on SPOTIFY are 24 years old, impressionable and easy to swing to the wrong side of the truth.

These young people believe SPOTIFY would never present grossly unfactual information. They unfortunately are wrong. I knew I had to try to point that out.

All my music is available on SPOTIFY, being sold to these young people, people who believe what they are hearing because it is on SPOTIFY, and people like me are supporting SPOTIFY by presenting my music there.

I realized I could not continue to support SPOTIFY’s life threatening misinformation to the music loving public.

Before I told my friends at Warner Bros about my desire to leave the SPOTIFY platform, I was reminded by my own legal forces that contractually I did not have the control of my music to do that. I announced I was leaving anyway, because I knew I was. I was prepared to do all I could and more just to make sure that happened.

I want to thank my truly great and supportive record company Warner Brothers – Reprise Records, for standing with me in my decision to pull all my music from Spotify. Thank You!

There is an upside for my listeners, people who may be listening to the 60 years of music I have made in my life so far. It is this: many other platforms, Amazon, Apple, and Qobuz, to name a few, present my music today in all its High-Resolution glory – the way it is intended to be heard, while unfortunately SPOTIFY continues to peddle the lowest quality in music reproduction. So much for art. But now that is in the past for me. Soon my music will live on in a better place.

I truly want to thank the many, many people who have reached out to me thanking me for taking this position – people who are health professionals on the front lines, people who have lost loved ones to COVID or who are worried for their own children and families. I have never felt so much love coming from so many.

I sincerely hope that other artists and record companies will move off the SPOTIFY platform and stop supporting SPOTIFY’s deadly misinformation about COVID.

Seine Sache, seine Musik, seine Kohle. Allerdings hat er jüngst 50% der Rechte an seinem Katalog an Hipgnosis, eine Verwertungsgesellschaft und quasi ein Investmentfonds, verkauft. Ob die das so toll finden, wenn ihr neuestes Knaller-Investment aus persönlichen Gründen nicht mehr auf der größten Streamingplattform zu finden ist? Würde mich nicht überraschen, wenn seine Musik dann doch weiter auf Spotify angeboten wird.

Fragwürdig ist, dass er seine Begründung abschließend mit "In the name of Truth" versieht. Er darf ja glauben, was er will. Aber er legt nicht fest, was die Wahrheit ist. Er suggeriert aber, die Wahrheit wäre auf seiner Seite. Darauf fallen natürlich genau die rein, die er meint vor der "Unwahrheit" schützen zu müssen.

Die leicht beeinflußbaren 24-jährigen, auf die Neil Young Bezug nimmt, sind übrigens von der Erkrankung um die es hier geht quasi nicht bedroht, wenn sie gesund sind. Für diese Gruppe macht eine Impfung daher wenig Sinn und Neil Young braucht sich in dieser Sache nicht um sie zu sorgen.

Zensur, auch wenn es hier quasi freiwillige Selbszensur ist, hat noch nie dazu beigetragen die "Wahrheit" zu finden. Wer arrogant und borniert glaubt, in komplexen Themen die Wahrheit zu kennen und deshalb alle, die nicht in seinem Sinne daher reden als böse verunglimpfen zu müssen erweckt bestenfalls das Vertrauen derer, die das Denken anderen überlassen.

Joe Rogan wird als "gefährlich" tituliert, weil er über Dinge reden lässt, die längst aus dem engen, massenmedien-gemachten Meinungskorridor verschwunden sind. Find ich gut, weil ich mir gerne viele Aspekte und Meinungen anhöre und mir dann selber meine Meinung bilde. Ich brauche niemanden, der für mich denkt und vorfiltert, was ich hören, lesen oder sehen darf.

Young warf Spotify vor, Falschinformationen über Impfstoffe zu verbreiten, und bezog sich dabei auf den umstrittenen Podcast des US-Comedians Joe Rogan. „Sie können Rogan oder Young haben. Nicht beide“, drohte Young diese Woche mit einem Boykott der Plattform – Rogan darf nun offenbar bleiben, Youngs Musik ist nicht mehr abrufbar.

On Dec. 31, 2021, the Joe Rogan Experience (JRE), a Spotify-exclusive podcast, uploaded a highly controversial episode featuring guest Dr. Robert Malone (#1757). The episode has been criticized for promoting baseless conspiracy theories and the JRE has a concerning history of broadcasting misinformation, particularly regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. By allowing the propagation of false and societally harmful assertions, Spotify is enabling its hosted media to damage public trust in scientific research and sow doubt in the credibility of data-driven guidance offered by medical professionals. JRE #1757 is not the only transgression to occur on the Spotify platform, but a relevant example of the platform’s failure to mitigate the damage it is causing.

We are a coalition of scientists, medical professionals, professors, and science communicators spanning a wide range of fields such as microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, and neuroscience and we are calling on Spotify to take action against the mass-misinformation events which continue to occur on its platform. With an estimated 11 million listeners per episode, JRE is the world’s largest podcast and has tremendous influence. Though Spotify has a responsibility to mitigate the spread of misinformation on its platform, the company presently has no misinformation policy.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Joe Rogan has repeatedly spread misleading and false claims on his podcast, provoking distrust in science and medicine. He has discouraged vaccination in young people and children, incorrectly claimed that mRNA vaccines are “gene therapy,” promoted off-label use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19 (contrary to FDA warnings), and spread a number of unsubstantiated conspiracy theories. In episode #1757, Rogan hosted Dr. Robert Malone, who was suspended from Twitter for spreading misinformation about COVID-19. Dr. Malone used the JRE platform to further promote numerous baseless claims, including several falsehoods about COVID-19 vaccines and an unfounded theory that societal leaders have “hypnotized” the public. Many of these statements have already been discredited. Notably, Dr. Malone is one of two recent JRE guests who has compared pandemic policies to the Holocaust. These actions are not only objectionable and offensive, but also medically and culturally dangerous.

The average age of JRE listeners is 24 years old and according to data from Washington State, unvaccinated 12-34 year olds are 12 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID than those who are fully vaccinated. Dr. Malone’s interview has reached many tens of millions of listeners vulnerable to predatory medical misinformation. Mass-misinformation events of this scale have extraordinarily dangerous ramifications. As scientists, we face backlash and resistance as the public grows to distrust our research and expertise. As educators and science communicators, we are tasked with repairing the public’s damaged understanding of science and medicine. As physicians, we bear the arduous weight of a pandemic that has stretched our medical systems to their limits and only stands to be exacerbated by the anti-vaccination sentiment woven into this and other episodes of Rogan’s podcast.

This is not only a scientific or medical concern; it is a sociological issue of devastating proportions and Spotify is responsible for allowing this activity to thrive on its platform. We, the undersigned doctors, nurses, scientists, and educators thus call on Spotify to immediately establish a clear and public policy to moderate misinformation on its platform.

Aber was wissen die schon....
Es war deren Aufforderung an Spotify, die Youngs Aufmerksamkeit geweckt hat und nun hat er die Konsequenzen gezogen. Das ist weder arrogant noch borniert und es ist zu hoffen, dass andere Musiker diesem Beispiel folgen.

Jaja, schon klar, die angeblichen "vielen Wissenschaftler", die dann automatisch "die Wissenschaft" repräsentieren, was dann wiederum "die Wahrheit" darstellt. Die haben es Kopernikus und Galilei schon schwer gemacht und es klappt halt immer noch.

Wenn man lang genug sucht oder gut zahlt, lassen sich immer ausreichend viele Experten zu jedem beliebigen Thema finden. Und wenn man nicht genug findet, schreibt man einfach dutzende Phantasienamen hin.

Die vielen Ärzte und "Wissenschaftler" berufen sich bezüglich der 24-jährigen auf eine einzige Publikation einer Behörde, welche sie auch noch falsch zitieren um ihren Argumenten mehr Gewicht zu geben.

Aus dem Brief, den die vielen angeblichen Wissenschaftler unterzeichnet haben sollen:
"The average age of JRE listeners is 24 years old and according to data from Washington State, unvaccinated 12-34 year olds are 12 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID than those who are fully vaccinated."

Besagter Faktor 12 findet sich in der referenzierten Publikation nicht. Stattdessen heißt es:
"Unvaccinated 12-34 year-olds in Washington are 5 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 compared with fully vaccinated 12-34 yearolds."

Wenns denn stimmen würde, wäre das immer noch eindeutig. Aber die vielen schlauen Leute, denen man blind vertraut, haben sich die Daten scheinbar nicht mal angeschaut, bevor sie den Brief unterzeichnet haben. Oder haben die alle eine der Kernaussagen des offenen Briefes übersehen? Für echte Wissenschaftler wäre so etwas peinlich.

Ansonsten finden wir in dem Brief Verweise auf Medienberichte im Internet, was man natürlich nicht als wissenschaftliches Arbeiten bezeichnen kann. Da kann schließlich jeder den größten Quatsch schreiben. Und dann ist da noch ein Link zu einer Behörde, der FDA. Mehr nicht. Ein seriöser Wissenschaftler, der an der Wahrheitsfindung forscht, unterschriebt so einen Käse nicht. Neil Young hat das nicht erkannt. Sein Pech.

Das sind übrigens, wie auch in dem Artikel aus Washington, "unsaubere" Zahlen. Es wird nicht zwischen "mit" und "an Covid gestorben" unterschieden. Die Zahlen der an Covid verstorbenen sind also nochmal kleiner.

Alles in allem sollte man, wenn man keine Ahnung hat, die Klappe halten. Auch Neil Young. Man muss aber nicht die Klappe halten. Noch nicht. Zum Glück für uns alle und Neil Young.

Euch ist schon klar das Neil Young laut seiner Aussage einfach von Spotify zu Apple Music gewechselt ist, und ihm so kaum Einnahmen entgehen.

2020 soll das Unternehmen Rogan mehr als 100 Millionen Dollar gezahlt haben, um seinen Podcast samt Archiv exklusiv an sich zu binden. Seither stellt Spotify diesen Podcast stets an die Spitze der angeblich meistgehörten Angebote.

Spotify kündigt an, alle Beiträge zu Covid-19 künftig mit einem Hinweis zu wissenschaftlichen Informationen über die Pandemie zu versehen. Der Streamingdienst reagiert damit auf Kritik berühmter Musiker und deren Abkehr von der Plattform.

Angesichts wachsender Kritik von Künstlerseite hat die schwedische Streaming-Plattform Spotify angekündigt, Hörer von Corona-Podcasts zu wissenschaftlichen Informationen aus verlässlichen Quellen über die Pandemie zu leiten. "Wir arbeiten daran, jeder Podcast-Episode, die eine Diskussion über Covid-19 enthält, einen Inhaltshinweis hinzuzufügen", erklärte Spotify-Chef Daniel Ek.

Diese neue Initiative gegen Falschinformationen werde in den kommenden Tagen weltweit umgesetzt, teilte Ek mit. Damit gehe Spotify auf seine Nutzer ein, die in den vergangenen Tagen Fragen über die Grenze zwischen akzeptablen und inakzeptablen Inhalten der Plattform aufgeworfen hätten, hieß es weiter.

Richtlinien für Urheber

Über den technischen Hinweis sollten die Hörer "Zugang zu datengestützten Fakten, aktuellen Informationen, die von Wissenschaftlern, Ärzten, Akademikern und Gesundheitsbehörden auf der ganzen Welt verbreitet werden, sowie Links zu vertrauenswürdigen Quellen" erhalten, erklärte Ek. Zudem wolle das Unternehmen Richtlinien für Urheber von Inhalten veröffentlichen, in denen die Plattform genauer definiert, was sie als "gefährlich" und "irreführend" ansieht.

Ihm sei "klar geworden, dass wir eine Verpflichtung haben, mehr zu tun, um Ausgewogenheit zu schaffen und Zugang zu Informationen zu gewähren, die von den medizinischen und wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaften weitgehend akzeptiert werden", erklärte der schwedische Milliardär.

"Potenziell tödliche Desinformation"

Zuvor hatten mehrere Künstler, darunter die Rockmusiker Neil Young und Joni Mitchell, angekündigt, ihre Musik von Spotify abzuziehen. Young hatte vor einigen Tagen seine gesamte Musik von der Streaming-Plattform entfernen lassen. Der 76-Jährige hatte Spotify zuvor erfolglos aufgefordert, den Podcast des umstrittenen US-Comedian Joe Rogan zu entfernen. Er und Mitchell warfen Rogan vor, Falschinformationen über das Coronavirus zu verbreiten. "Spotify ist zu einem Ort der potenziell tödlichen Desinformation über Covid geworden", kritisierte Young.

Spotify wolle seinen Nutzern alle Musik- und Audioinhalte zugänglich machen, hieß es darauf zunächst in einem Statement des schwedischen Konzerns. Das Unternehmen habe umfassende Inhaltsrichtlinien und seit Beginn der Pandemie mehr als 20.000 Podcast-Episoden mit Bezug auf Corona aus dem Angebot entfernt.

Rogan ist einer der beliebtesten Podcast-Hosts weltweit. Ihm wird jedoch vorgeworfen, unter anderem von der Impfung Jugendlicher abgeraten und für die Behandlung von Covid-19 mit dem vorwiegend in der Tiermedizin eingesetzten Entwurmungsmittel Ivermectin geworben zu haben. Vergangenes Jahr hatte der 54-Jährige mit Spotify einen geschätzt 100 Millionen Dollar, das entspricht 89 Millionen Euro, schweren Exklusiv-Vertrag geschlossen.
