Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern appeared unshaken as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake rattled the Beehive during a live television interview. But she wasn't so calm on the inside.

"Are you serious?" were the words that went through her head, she laughed as she told reporters at the post-Cabinet news conference on Monday afternoon.

Speaking from the podium just steps from where she was when the quake hit, Ardern said there wasn't a lot to "drop, cover and hold under".

Ardern was standing in the Beehive theatrette as the shaking began, conducting a live interview with AM Show host Ryan Bridge.

"We're just having a bit of an earthquake here ... Quite a decent shake here, but if you see things moving behind me, the Beehive moves more than most," Ardern said as Parliament swayed.

Asked if she was okay to continue the interview, Ardern confirmed she felt safe to carry on.

"We're fine Ryan, I'm not under any hanging lights, it looks like I'm in a structurally sound place."

On Monday afternoon, Ardern added that it wasn't daughter Neve's first earthquake - "I think we've had tremors before," she said - but Premier House usually feels them "quite acutely".

Ardern was not the only politician to feel the Monday morning shake. Finance Minister Grant Robertson tweeted "Not what we need right now ... Big long rumble leading up to that. Hope all ok up the line in Levin area'.

National's Amy Adams, the MP for Selwyn, similarly tweeted, saying it was a "nasty jolt for Wellington and Levin area".
